Deirdre Barlow - Trendsetter

It's official. The 1980's are back with gusto. According to the Globe and Mail, the paper of record for tony, urban-dwelling people earning six-figure incomes Canada's national newspaper, the latest trend is a return to giant, chunky, oversized glasses, like everyone wore in the 1980's. If 2 or 3 people notice something simutaneously, and one of them knows somebody who writes for the lifestyle section of the Globe and Mail, then it's a confirmed trend.

And to think people used to make fun of Deirdre Barlow.

Next trend: cinched waists!

Dressing badly to make oneself interesting is so much easier than having a personality.

Just ask Ben Mulroney!

Meanwhile, Glacia ooks for that six figure salary that accompanies her G&M subscription.

I didn't mean the readers had six figure salaries, just the G&M's intended audience.

I had to give up my G&M subscription when Karen von Hahn, Russell Smith, RM Vaughn, and Leah McLaren collectively told me I wasn't cool or affluent enough to read their paper.

And because I don't own a 3 story "cottage" in the Muskokas.

Now I read the UK Guardian and pretend I'm Ken Barlow.

Well, I keep reading it and just on keep pretending I'm Barbara Amiel.

Well, the pendulum had to swing back the other way sooner or later. I swear that glass frames are getting so narrow pretty soon they won't be able to fit a lens in them.

Hopefully it will take some time for big frame trend to hit the west coast (I'll give it a decade - we're always the last to know) because I have to buy my daughter new glasses this week and heaven forbid she should wear something that isn't in style.

I hope they don't bring those ugly things back! I just got new glasses there were extremely expensive!

Off topic question - what happened to Lloyd? Nowhere to be found lately - did I miss (or forget) something?

Furthermore, I hope Jamie doesn't go anywhere - that actor has turned into one of the best on the Street (unlike his horrible, horrible little brother - how the hell did that kid get a job on such a popular, high profile program? At least they had sense enough to write him out quickly).

The actor who played Lloyd was given a leave of absence or was made to leave temporarily to go to drug rehab. He was involved in a scandal where he was seen doing some sort of drug in public and it was caught on a camera. (In the UK)
I am sure they let him back because I see him on the ITV updates and he is mentioned.

Good God in heaven, NOOOO...

I seem to be having a bad flashback to a pair of glasses like that, but PURPLE.

Well, I was quite young at the time.

At least I never wore parachute pants.

Ooooh, does that mean rocking cool belts are coming back too? Deirdre is usually sporting a wicked cool silvery belt...

Boy, I get mean when I can't sleep, huh?

Lloyd, Dev and Les all have well-publicized substance abuse problems and have all had to leave the show at one time or another. (these aren't spoilers since they either already happened or else were discussed here).

Um, there are some awesome Sally Jesse Raphael glasses on my facebook pics somewhere... I'm Mary Beth Bourke, Tawingo 80's Scanned Photos 3

I wore parachute pants, and I'm damned proud of it!

~missusmac, who had black Sally Jesse Raphael glasses too.

Big frames can look cool when you try them on without the lenses, but unfortunate problem with big glasses is they make the area of one's face behind the lenses look freakishly big or small. Little frames really reduce that alarming effect.
