Update - January 5, 2007 - Funeral for a Friend

So long, Mike

Norris and Rita are closing up the Kabin as they prepare for Mike's funeral. As Rita puts up a sign informing customers that they're closed for the day, Norris is yammering on about the promising replies he received from the dating site from MistressVikky69 and NaughtySpankstress, or whatever they were called.

Adam and Ken arrive to ask Rita for an envelope. As he and Norris enter the Kabin, Ken tells Rita that Adam is still very angry over the way things went. He doesn't think it's going to be a good day.

Meanwhile at the flat, Leanne and Janice don't want to wear black as its miserable. Danny suggests they stay behind but no such luck.

Later on, the three of them are confronted on the street by Frankie who thought Leanne was told to stay home. Leanne doesn't catch on to Danny's lie and says she's supporting her boyfriend. Danny tells the ladies to go wait in the pub as Adam just stares at him through the window. Inside, Ken suggests he stay clear of Danny today.

In the pub, Leanne asks Danny about what he said to Frankie but he tells her that's what she said at the time and suggests she drop the subject.

Bev tells Shelley and Penny that Fred won't touch the bottle of scotch as Mike had just opened before he died. Shelley meanwhile, tries to comfort Penny, who merely nods her head underneath her giant Spy vs. Spy hat.

Adam and Jamie come in and Adam accepts Danny's handshake ("Mike's day") but Jamie refuses.

Outside the bells rings as two black horses draw a funeral carriage in which we see a floral tribute and Mike's coffin. Running this particular show is local funeral director, and Blanche's ex-boyfriend, Archie Shuttleworth. The entire street comes out to watch it pass.

At the church, there is some confusion over the pallbearer arrangements as none of the Baldwin boys want to be too near to Danny. Fred meanwhile is trying to compose a eulogy for Mike, asking Dev (he's back!) what year he bought his villa in Spain.

In the church, Fred gets up to make his speech.

"OH DEAR," he begins. "I WAS GOING TO TELL YOU WHAT A BARROW BOY FROM THE EAST END OF LONDON HAD ACHIEVED WITH HIS LIFE. THAT'S WHAT I WAS GOING TO TELL YOU, BUT ALL I CAN THINK ABOUT IS WHAT I'M GOING TO MISS. MY FRIEND MICHAEL, THE ONE I USED TO SIT UP WITH UNTIL THE EARLY HOURS BECAUSE ONE OF US HAD HAD A DISASTER OR MADE A TERRIBLE MISTAKE. NO STRANGERS TO DISASTERS OR MISTAKES, HIM AND ME, BUT NOWT THAT A GOOD BOTTLE OF MALT WOULDN'T SEEM TO MAKE SOFTER. OR WE'D SMOKE ONE OF HIS BEST HAVANA CIGARS IF WE HAD SOMETHING TO CELEBRATE. WE HAD ONE WHEN PENNY MOVED IN WITH HIM. WE WERE DUE ANOTHER SOON. I'M GETTING MARRIED, SEE? HE WERE GOING TO BE MY BEST MAN. HE'LL BE THERE THOUGH, SOMEHOW. THE DEAD NEVER REALLY DIE, DO THEY? THEY LIVE ON IN OUR HEARTS, AND IN OUR MINDS. THANK YOU MICHAEL."

Fred says he can't go on as Mark quietly slips in the back.

Then it's Danny's turn for a speech.

"I lost my dad last year," he begins. "That was Harry, the one who was retroactively inserted into Mike's family history, and me along with him. Anyway, he died and then it turns out Mike was my Dad all along, even though he never made mention of a brother for, what, 30 years?"

OK, I'm paraphrasing. Danny goes on to talk about Mike gave him his first job and was hard on him but in his way, was teaching him that the only way to be a success was hard work. No hand-outs. No free rides. Adam mutters that comment was directed at him.

Outside by the hearse, Adam confronts Danny about his speech. Danny tells him to consider the possibility that Mike spent Adam's inheritance while he was alive - the posh school, the flash motor. Adam says it's not about the money. Danny suggest that he could drop the hard done by act. The conversation becomes more heated as Ken suddenly lunges at Danny, telling him that it isn't enough that Adam lost his parents, and now Danny is taking the factory of him, too. He also mentions that Adam is 17. Wha...? I looked it up. He is. His 18th birthday is in a few weeks.

It ends with Frankie simply saying, "Shame on you, Danny."

Here he comes/Prepare for the worst/The stupidest man in the universe*

After a particularly taxing manicure given by Sarah to Tracey, Jason blurts out that the reason Tracey isn't feeling well is that she recently had an abortion. But, you know, don't say anything. D'oh!

In other news, scientists discovered recently that there is no internet, it's just Jason Grimshaw going around telling people things.

In other news...

Gail is upset about the Hillman card but there's nothing like a good funeral to take your mind off your dead serial killer husband.

Chesney asks Fizz to tell the social worker that Cilla is not a shit mum so it will help Les' adoption request.

*Obscure reference.

Yay! YAY! Archie's back. I love Archie Shuttleworth, such a gentleman. So supportive of Audrey during the Hillman horror. And yes, she 'stole' him from Blanche.

Spy vs Spy hat. Hahahahahahaha! Very appropriate~!

Adam acted just his age, young, impudent, rude, stupid and with incredibly bad timing. Just like a 17-year-old. Ken should have acted better.

Flamin' Nora, the Mike storyline made the Sunday Report on CBC this morning! I tuned in when I happened to flip by and noticed a gentleman wearing a T-shirt that read "Real Men Watch Coronation St". Way cool side note, the host Evan Solomon is a Corrie fan.

If I can link to the site the url is

If anyone was able to capture this please post it on UKnova.

cheers!

I saw the piece on CBC Sunday - there were 3 fans discussing why Mike Baldwin's death mattered to them - were any of them posters on this blog? There was a Rob (and I think we have 2 Robs) as well as a John...

Did anyone else have flashbacks to Imitation of Life watching that funeral?
