Happy Birthday Emily

EILEEN DERBYSHIRE (our Emily Bishop)

Born: October 6 (Year unconfirmed. References found for 1929, 1930 and 1931) in Urmston, Manchester

“It’s strange, but people talk to me as though I’m Emily – they apologize if they swear and, if they offer me a drink, it’s always a sweet sherry.”
- Eileen Derbyshire

Eileen’s acting career started when she hopped off a bus after passing Chorlton repertory theatre. Acting on impulse she went in, asked for an audition and was taken on as an actress/assistant stage manager. As well as acting on stage, Eileen had a long, enjoyable career in radio, making her first appearance as a teenager in the BBC’s Children’s Hour.

Emily first stepped onto the cobbles in December 1960 as an extra for the third episode of Coronation Street. She returned in January 1961 as Emily Bishop. Only William Roache (our Ken Barlow) has been on the show longer than Eileen.

Eileen is renowned on the set as a great wit.

She shuns publicity and seldom speaks to the press.
