Classic Corrie Info

I FINALLY get to see Bet's departure, which I think the CBC screwed us out of originally.

Remember when Samir Rashid was tragically killed, leaving our
Deirdre widowed?
Bet's difficult decision to leave the Street?
Or Raquel and Curly's on-again, off-again marriage?

Fans of CORRIE will be thrilled with this special chance to wander
down memory lane-weekdays and nights-with CORONATION STREET
CLASSICS, which debuts on CBC's digital channel Country Canada,
Monday, May 30. Seen three times a day at 4 p.m. ET, 8 p.m. ET and
12:30 a.m. ET.

Going back to episodes from 1995, CORONATION STREET CLASSICS on CBC
Country Canada offers a nostalgic look back at some of the best
shows in the series. CORONATION STREET is the world's longest
running drama serial and, without doubt, one of the most successful
television programs ever.

Highlights of CORONATION STREET CLASSICS include the beating death
of Samir (Al Nedjari), the younger and beloved husband of Deirdre
(Anne Kirkbride); the arrival of the gorgeous Maxine (Tracy Shaw),
who ended up brutally murdered by Gail's (Helen Worth) psycho
husband Richard (Brian Capron); the sad departure from the Street of
flamboyant long-time resident Bet Lynch (Julie Goodyear); the
beautiful Raquel's (Sarah Lancashire) tumultuous relationship with
Curly (Kevin Kennedy); and then, Raquel's departure from CORONATION
STREET; and it wouldn't be Corrie if Ken Barlow (William Roach, the
only original

Thanks Shatnerian for the update on ITV vs. BBC.

So, shame on you ITV!

I did go to their site to check out the Corrie buzz and found this:

Note to Claire - that look NEVER worked for Deidre and it won't work for you.

This Day in Coronation Street History

Saskatoon TV station CBKST made the Guinness Book of World Records when it bought 1,144 episodes of Coronation Street from Granada TV on May 31, 1971. The purchase was the largest number of episodes of a TV series ever sold in one transaction.

Oh COME on!

Look, I don't know WHO over at BBC thought they could be judge and jury on which characters are the 'hunks' and which are mere mortals - but whoever they are, they owe us an apology.

Oh sure, I sat through blah, blah, Ken Barlow, blah, blah Nick Tilsley (and his bullet nipples), blah, blah that schmo Karen fell for....

But precisely WHERE was the alpha male?

You know of course, I'm speaking of that pantheon of British machoness, one Mr.Percy Sugden.

Shame on you BBC, for shame!

Happy Birthday Nick

Born: May 29, 1978

Adam Rickitt (Corrie’s Nick Tilsley) turns 27 today.

Things That Make You Go Hmmmm...

Am I the only one who noticed that Shelly's top matches her wallpaper?

Oh boy.
We haven't seen the last of her.
Does she tamper with Dev's brakes?
Does she sneak into the apartment with a meat cleaver?

Corrie Sitings

Okay, I almost forgot...Eddie Yeats comes back as Onslow on 'Keeping Up Appearances'.

Fred Elliot was the doctor in Remains of the Day and I *think* he makes an appearance on Dr. Who this week.

'Ere! 'Ow come I dinna know that 'tetanus' 'ad a vowel in the middle until I 'eard Frankie make it a free syllable word this week?

Attention BC Residents Only

There’s been a programming change that applies to British Columbia only. The Coronation Street Special – Hunks – regularly scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 29, will air at 11:00 a.m. instead.

I gots myself a Corrie Monopoly game on ebay!!!

Will need to organize a game night with the Toronto contigency.

You only have yourselves to blame

Today's question comes from last week's discussion...

If you had to choose - who would it be, Les or Fred?

I know that's dark - but hey, that's what I was given.

Crumb Test Dummy

“We haven’t found a human who can test on this scale.” Obviously they could have used me as the guinea pig for this while I’m watching a Corrie omnibus.

Coronation Street Monopoly

Last week’s Corrie featured a rousing game of Monopoly at the Battersby residence. Janice discovered the long-neglected game in the closet and threatened to put it in Emily’s jumble sale. “You can’t bin that Janice,” exclaimed Les. “It’s part of the Battersby heritage!”

Does anyone have a copy of this Monopoly edition in the closet?

I Could Have Plotzed

When Ashley came out with the 'I'm not Josh's dad' comment. In fact, did I hear him correctly? If this is something that was known from a way back, don't tell me. I came in just shortly after Maxine was offed. (I'm also getting a little sick of how sensitive Claire and Aahley are. They're constantly offending each other. blech.)

Favorite moments:

Kirk is going on about bloated rats and Les says, 'It's Sunday!' invoking that long standing British tradition of not speaking of deceased rodents on Sunday.

Kieran says he wouldn't sleep with Penny for 50,000 - cause he's worth 100,000. I love it!

This one is for Uta. When Eileen is going on about being with Harry 'stuck in Germany on the Autobahn while Harry tries to fix the crank shaft.' Of course I'm trying to quickly translate 'Krankshaft' into English.

Double Trouble

Keith Duffy and Colin Farrell. Need I say more?

Too Too Much

Archbishop Desmond Tutu confessed that he is a Coronation Street fan or as he calls it, “Corolation Street.” He joins the ranks of famous Corrie fans including Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Charles, Prime Minister Tony Blair, Shirley Bassey, Tom Jones and Barry Manilow.

Happy Birthday Betty

Born May 20, 1920

Betty Driver (Corrie’s Betty Williams) has been serving pints to punters at the Rovers since 1969. She’s famous for ‘Betty’s Hotpot’ but in real life she’s a vegetarian. Her book, ‘Betty: The Autobiography’ was published in 2000.

Betty Driver facts:

Made her first stage appearance at age 9. Won a bottle of toffees for being the loudest singer.

Turned pro at age 11, singing in variety all over Manchester. Stage mother Nellie was determined to turn our Betty into a star as they toured the country without holidays or rest.

Built a successful career as one of Britain’s top dance-band singers.

Had her own radio series, ‘A Date with Betty’ and her own TV show, ‘The Betty Driver Show.’

Ran a county pub in Derbyshire with her sister Freda and their father. Betty was discovered pulling pints in the pub by a Corrie producer and the rest is history.

Cilla vs. Maya: Battle of the Smirks!

How can I slag Maya's acting but laugh at Cilla's? Even though I swear they both attended the British Academy of Soap Over Acting, majoring in over the top facial expressions, minoring in sidelong smirks and eyebrow cocks, with a focus on yelling and screaming when talking would do, Maya graduated summa cum laude while Cilla hung out behind the sheds having a smoke while giggling about which boys were fittest.

So why don't I despise Cilla and her poor man's impression of Marilyn Monroe? She's fighting over Les Battersby for God's sake -- how can that story line be seen as anything other than a bit of fun? Whereas we are supposed to believe that Maya is a serious woman, an intelligent solicitor who destroyed her career and is well on her way to destroying her relationship with others because of her overemotional behaviour.

Having said all this, if I met Cilla in real life I'd probably grab Chesney and run away! As a social worker, I've seen more than my share of boys like him, tired of moving from place to place and having "uncle" after "uncle", forced to grow up so he can parent himself and his own mother. And when he finally settles down in one place with people who love him and offer him stability, his slaggy mother ruins it all by returning to Uncle Ronnie, destroying his family yet again. I hope we haven't seen the last of little Chensey -- his acting skills are on par with any of the adults and his scenes with Schmichael bring a tear to my eye!

I just feel evil now

So of all the offensive things I could EVER imagine to put up on this site, suggesting that Haley have an affair was not one of them.

Apparantly I waaaaaaaaaaaay underestimated the affection my fellow corrites have for the man they call 'The Roy'.

I apologize for my tainted words.

But haley IS going to have an affair....with Jason! AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAAAA!

Yes, I've got my horns on today.

The Battersby Charm

He’s Corrie’s King of Charisma. Les Battersby fancies himself irresistible to the ladies. And who can argue? Janice and Cilla are duking it out for his affections. And that snakeskin ‘pulling’ jacket could cast a hypnotic spell on any woman! Let’s have a look at some quotes from The Master himself. Beware lest you fall under his spell…

“Women can't resist me. It's getting to be a curse.”

“I can’t help it if I’m a good-looking bloke.”

“Being attractive to women is a burden.”

“I’ve been cursed with animal magnetism.”

“I’m irre-flamin’-sistible.”

Maya: Classically trained or annoying?

As my first post, I have to comment on Maya's acting. Her every move is overdone: When she broke into Sunita's house with the purloined key, she looked at the key, then around the block, then back to the door before putting the key in the lock. When she says something "evil", she cocks an eyebrow or offers us an evil smirk. When she is happy with Dev, she's all over him; when she's mad, she flails and grimaces and her voice quavers like Mariah Carey on a high note. She reminds me of an actress from a silent movie where every move is telegraphed with over-the-top actions.

My mother wonders if she is classically trained so her actions are meant to be seen by an audience member in the back of the theatre. But I've seen her in other programmes ("Rescue Me", I think it was called) and she wasn't as irritating. She reminds me of Homer Simpson's comments about how you can tell the dog in the movie is evil -- he has those shifty eyes.

One of the hallmarks of Corrie is "realism" of the actors, the sets, the stories...maybe that's why Maya seems out of place to me. She reminds me of the local drama queen whose every movement is for show. She poses, she preens, she makes a meal out of her every line. I can't wait until Dev finally dumps her and realizes Sunita is the one for him!!! (A guess, not a spoiler...I just like those two together!)

(Argh...I'm watching an episode from a few weeks ago, and she just did the key thing again! We know you have a key. We know you think you're being naughty. Why do you have to look at the key in that slightly strange way??? Now she's going through Sunita's date book! She sees "doctor's clinic" noted there and looks up wistfully, as if in thought! Argh!)

Question for May 17th, 2005

Okay, before anything...what's with the Kieran beefcake shots this week? NOT that I'm complaining and I think I'm begining to gain a certain 'appreciation' of our favorite Irishman - but it kind of comes out of the blue. (Please don't let him and Tracey get togehter.)

This weeks question, after watching Haley and Roy interact last week, I have to wonder, 'Do you think Haley could have done better?'

Despite her deep dark secret, I just think that he's just far too much of a walley and she could have done a bit better. Maybe it's just me. Opinions? (I think it would be hilarious if she ended up having an affair.)

More Corrie sitings. On the "One" channel they have a show called, 'Fat Friends' on monday nights from England. I spy with my little eye, Angela from Corrie.

Not That There's Anything Wrong With That Siting
Also, we were watching Dr. Who last night and I pointed out to my hubby (who watches Corrie St. in the sense that it invades brain when I have it playing)that Todd was a character on Dr. Who.

Hubby, 'Todd?'

Moi, 'The guy who came out of the closet a few weeks ago. Engaged to Sarah. Remember, Gay Todd.'

Hubby, 'Oh right, Gay Todd.'

So throughout the whole thing we're like, 'What's Gay Todd doing now?' 'Hey, look out Gay Todd!' 'I thought Gay Todd was here for three episodes.'

Finally hubby said that perhaps we were sounding like jerks, the actor had a real name - I concurred.

Doesn't matter, I think Gay Todd is off Dr.Who for good.

Corrie Quips

One of my favourite things about Coronation Street is the quick backtalk that goes on.
This mornings examples:

Blanche talking about Frankie:
"She's got more front than Woolworths".
(I remember Woolworths)

Kevin talking to Sally about Dev & Steve's service contract:
"I don't care if he passes wind through the service hatch"
BTW, Sally is really, really bugging me. And Rosie needs a foot up her ass.

Deidre talking to Tracy about the baby crying:
"So then, I'll go upstairs and tell her to pack it in, shall I?"
How long do you think it'll be before Child Welfare takes the kid way?

Did I miss any?

I like the storyline with lazy Sarah Louise in the Salon.
I think it's hilarious how she throws around the fact that her grandmother owns the shop, and how it's going to be hers when she "kicks it". I like how she irritates Maria and Candice, and I like how none of them take any shit from her.

On to other things.
Sunita and Dev.
Gonna happen or no?
I think that eventually Maya will go crazed like that nutbar Gail was married to.
But, I think that Maya will go the poison route.

How about the new romance possibilities of Leanne and that little weasel that just came into town? I think it could be pretty entertaining.

Sunday's Sermon

Must have been a slow news day.

Toronto Pub Night Referendum

Toronto people, I propose the following:

1) Friday May 20th

2) Duke of York (Bedford and Bloor)

I'm suggesting something local downtown for the first and then go out to the wilds of the Beaches.

Any thoughts or comments? I'm flexible, I just wanted to get the ball rolling.

I'll Drink To That!

Just in time for the weekend. It’s the Coronation Street Drinking Game!

Fred Elliot forgets to use his indoors voice - 2 Drinks
Someone says "Nowt" - 3 Drinks
Blanche Hunt insults someone - 1 Drink

Nick Does Nottingham

What exactly is Nick’s new job in Nottingham? Let’s speculate.

Has he gone back to nude modeling?

Rise and Fall of Sue Nicholls

There's our Audrey as the sexy secretary.

The Fall and Rise of Reginal Perrin was a great show. I think they should start a 'old britcom' channel, show all those shows. Especially Dave Allen and On the Buses.

Wednesday's Question
Which character needs to be shipped off to Canada for a few years and brought back in a new (more evil or nicer) form?

OH, I forgot to tell you - my favorite quote from last week was when BOTH Leanne and Maria called Gail a 'whiney bitch of a mother-in-law'

It felt so good that I had to watch it twice more on time shift t.v. - and I mouthed the words with them.

Carry On Alma

Amanda Barrie (Corrie's Alma Baldwin) as Cleopatra in 'Carry On Cleo'

Maya Loca

Sasha Behar (Mad Maya) as Senorita Pilar Estravados in ‘Hercule Poirot’s Christmas’ (1994)

Any sightings of Corrie stars in other film/TV roles?

Update on Last Week

Because the CBC are a bunch of jerks (I've got SUCH a hate on for CBC to begin with...) I will try to give an update of this week's corrie for anyone who missed.

Dev's results for the colonoscopy (I'm not getting the dictionary - sorry) came back and he has a clean bill of health.

Sunita isn't pregnant, however, she did faint at the store while Dev was talking to her and he took her to the doctor to find out what was what. He's standing by her and after a few agonizing tests we discovered that she has a brain anerysim (REALLY not getting the dictionary). So she has yet more tests to get, she may have to get surgery and there is a very slim chance that she could die from this.

Maya meanwhile is a lunatic and got it into her head that Sunita was pregnant with Dev's child (the irony being that Frankie was the one to plant that thought in her head). So now she believes that Dev took Sunita to have a abortion.

Plus Maya had some hissy fit and started throwing canned vegetables at Dev and tried to smash up the shop. WHAT does this guy see in her?

Nick and Maria
FINISHED! Maria couldn't get past the pic that Leanne took, but also made a very valid point that Nick put her last always. Behind her mom, behind his career, etc. I can understand what she is saying.

She's really destroyed by it, but realizes that life with Nik would be pretty miserable. So he's off to Nottingham and she's still at the shop.

Danny and Frankie
Danny took a day off to go sell their house behind Frankie's back and she's been all up his butt with 'where were you'? Then the constables come around to the house to question Danny because Frankie's ex lover (forget his name) had the snot beaten out of him that Sunday. Danny's not responsible, but the whole situation has put some distrust between the two of them.

Cilla's been sneaking around trying to get Chesney to poison the relationship between Les and Janice.

Les and Janice came up with a game plan to allow Chesney to see his mom but still keeping Cilla at arms' length.

Cheers to Janice for staying strong, showing compassion to Chesney but also explaining the facts of life to him.

Jeers to Les for LETTING CILLA KISS HIM! Les, you are such an idiot.

Roy bought a surprise gift for Haley - a globe of the world circa 1756 - because what woman wouldn't want that. After she inspected it and found out where Upper Canada, Siam, Constantinople and Gaul were, they had a lenghty discussion of travel.

They end up deciding to explore this blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this England(I can't spell, but I can quote). Roy immediately went out and bought some crap camper for Haley to drive.

Also, word on the UK Soap awards (one small spoiler in article, but kind of interesting)

Mums on the Street

Here is my contribution to Mother’s Day:

Printworks in Manchester did a survey asking people to name the mum that they would least like to be related to. Cilla, Janice, Tracey and Gail all made the list.

Personally, I would rate Cilla (Monster Mum) as number 1.

The votes cast by over 1000 visitors to The Printworks and to www.theprintworks.com are:

1. Lizzie Bardsley from Channel 4’s Wife Swap - 22%

2. Cilla Brown from Coronation Street (played by Wendi Peters) – 19%

3. Jade Goody from Big Brother 2 – 14%

4. Janice Battersby from Coronation Street (Vicky Entwistle) – 11%

5. Tracey Barlow (Kate Ford) from Coronation Street – 10%

6. Gail Tilsley (Helen Worth) from Coronation Street – 8%

7. Margaret Thatcher– 6%

8. Christine Hamilton – 5%

9. Sharon Osbourne – 3%

10. Barbara Royle (Sue Johnston) in The Royle Family – 2%

Coronation Street on Sunday

I'm cutting this from a posting on a corrie street yahoo group:

Due to a technical error, the noon repeat block of Coronation Street aired twice in Ontario, Quebec and Manitoba on Sunday, May 1, 2005. The missed episodes (5788, 5789, 5790 and 5791) will be broadcast on Sunday, May 8, 2005 from 6:00 A.M. - 8:00 A.M. in Ontario/ Quebec and 5:00 - 7:00 A.M. in Manitoba.

Also, because of our live coverage of VE Day on May 8, 2005, the normally scheduled omnibus of Coronation Street and the Coronation Street special on Sunday evening will be preempted. Please tune in Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday at 7:00 - 8:00 P.M. (7:30 NT) for this week's episodes.

So it looks like this week's episodes won't be aired on Sunday. I'll try to do an update for you guys tommorow.

Wednesday, May 04, 2005

Question of the Week - May 2

Okay, pull out your inner hussy and tell us who would you have a filthy, dirty, low down affair with on the show?

I think I'd have an affair with Kevin..not because I find him all that hot, it's just that I really think he needs it.

I know you are all going to scream, but I'd totally be on with Charlie (if I didn't think he'd sleep with my mom.). He's really nasty, but I still like his bad-boy post London 60's pop look.

BTW - I'm begining to enjoy Frankie. I can kind of relate to her - in ways that might make me look like a jerk - but she's not all bad.

Tuesday, May 03, 2005

I don't think Corrie is going to be shown this weekend. I don't know I thought I read that somewhere.

But please correct me if I'm wrong.

If it's true, does anyone want me to do updates because they won't see it this weekend?

Hey, look what I found me mateys! Betty's Hotpot Recipe!
